Cultivating the Necessary Attitudes to Change with Ease

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

Transformation of a butterfly
Transformation can be smooth

Isn’t it powerful to learn from life’s lessons and to finally make that change that you were always meant to… Yes, the one that was too big, too scary, too hard, too habitual or would take too long.

I came across this Cherokee Proverb a while back now and absolutely fell in love with it. It is so simple yet intensely accurate.

It goes: “Listen To The Whispers Of Your Soul, So You Won’t Have To Hear The Screams.

This proverb perfectly depicts how resistance to ‘letting go’ and ‘changing course’ creates unnecessary suffering.

And when we combine the ability to let go with self awareness and taking responsibility- we have a formula for ‘Changing With Ease’!

This is highlighted immaculately in the poem 'Autobiography in Five Chapters’ by Portia Nelson:

Chapter I

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in.

I am lost… I am hopeless.

It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in this same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it there.

I still fall in… it’s a habit… but,

my eyes are open.

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.

Change is conscious and easier when we are more acceptant and less resistant. And people who are at that non-resistant state, usually the have the following attitudes:

✴ They are self-aware

✴ They are able to identify patterns of behaviours, unconscious habits and their outcomes

✴ They are good at recognising their blind spots

✴ They take responsibility for all areas of their lives

✴ They can let go

✴ They have value-aligned, wise folk around them

If you are planning a significant change, start consciously focusing on these qualities. Maybe you possess them or maybe there is still a way to go and you would like to improve them.

And what better way than having the support of a skilled coach who specialises in transformation, to practise those skills.

If you would like to do that please get in touch by visiting my website and scheduling a clarity call with me. Looking forward to hearing from you.
