Conscious Living: Embrace the Magic of Late Winter and the Wonders of Cyclical Living in February ✨

Updated: Feb 2

We are in the final month of winter. While the days will continue to grow longer, it remains cold, giving us the perfect opportunity to fully embrace this last month of the season.

As a conscious leadership and life design coach, I often explore the concept of conscious living. I find late winter to be a particularly magical time of year, rich with opportunities for rest and reflection, as well as rejuvenation and re-energization.

Reclaiming the Rhythm of Winter

Whilst we increasingly lost our connection to cyclical living in the last century, our ancestors understood the significance of living in harmony with the seasons. They celebrated the cycle of life, drawing grounded-ness and vitality from the earth.

They cherished community, and found joy in simple pleasures.

Seasonal changes dictated not only what they ate but also how they celebrated, rested, and cared for one another.

And it feels like in the last few years, many have been rediscovering the beauty and benefits of returning to a way of living, where we honour and allow nature to guide us.

Savoring Seasonal Foods

One of the most beautiful aspects of embracing winter is indulging in the seasonal bounty that the UK has to offer. Eating with the seasons is not just beneficial for our health but also for local ecosystems and for supporting our farmers.

Here are some seasonal foods to enjoy:

  • Root Vegetables: It’s a great time to pack your meals with nourishing carrots, parsnips, and sweet potatoes, perfect for hearty soups and stews.

  • Brassicas: Kale, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are nutrient-rich but add texture and heartiness to winter dishes.

  • Fruits: Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons are fantastic to infuse your meals with zesty flavour and vitamin C, as well as apples, pears, cranberries and blackberries. Raisins, dates, dried  figs are also  great examples to enrich the winter plates.

  • Nuts: Walnuts, chestnuts, and hazelnuts are perfect for snacking or adding crunch to winter salads and baking.

  • Herbs: Enhancing the above flavours with winter herbs like rosemary, thyme, and sage can elevate your appreciation for winter foods and add medicinal properties to your meals. Incorporating these seasonal, local ingredients into our diets not only supports our health but also stimulates our connection to the earth.

Creating a Warm Winter Sanctuary With Colour and Light

Colours are important to express and expand our moods any time. And during Winter, Deep red, forest green, rich grey, white, purple, gold, silver and light blue are great to incorporate into your decor, to embody the season’s spirit and enjoy a cozy, winter environment.

Of course, the important role lighting plays in setting the mood cannot be undermined. Decorating your home with candles, fairy lights, and soft lamps with warm glow helps with relaxation and enhances the positivity in the ambience as well as encouraging the appreciation of the ‘present moment’.

The Art of Self-Care in Winter

As the cold weather continues, it becomes essential to prioritise our self-care. The winter months provide a unique opportunity to focus on nurturing ourselves. The following will promote warmth and wellbeing:

  • While many love the fresh runs in the cold, you can also embrace gentle physical activities such as yoga, tai-chi or brisk walks, to keep energy levels up and bodies strong.

  • Enjoy rejuvenating practices such as receiving Reiki- a gentle form of energy healing or a massage to keep the energy flowing.

  • Try soothing baths infused with essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus to relax and refresh.

  • Engage in mindfulness practices through meditation, journaling, or quiet evenings spent savouring a cup of herbal tea.

  • Curl up with a good book. Find a comfy spot by the fire and read a captivating novel.

Winter Adventures and Activities

Despite the cold, winter in the UK offers a variety of options for outdoor adventures. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or prefer peaceful strolls, there’s something for everyone:

  • Go ice skating at venues like Somerset House

  • Visit winter markets

  • Enjoy a local park, admire snow-covered landscapes

  • Explore scenic winter hikes in the Lake District or Scottish Highlands

  • For the more adventurous, ski resorts in Scotland provide great opportunities for skiing and snowboarding

  • Try bird watching- visit a bird feeder and observe winter birds

Festivals and Music

The UK is alive with winter festivities that celebrate culture, joy, and togetherness. It is not Christmas time any more but there’s still an abundance of events that gather people in celebration.

Some festivals that take place in the UK in February include:

  • Dark Skies Festival: A festival that takes place across the UK to celebrate the night sky

  • Jorvik Viking Festival: A festival that takes place in York, which was once the capital of Viking-ruled England

  • Imbolc: A Celtic feast that takes place on February 1st and marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox

  • And of course, St Valentine's Day

Additionally, let the soothing sound of winter music resonate within you. Explore seasonal concerts featuring artists like Norah Jones or Ben Howard, or discover local performances that evoke the spirit of the season. Venues like the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre  often host magical events that celebrate the essence of winter through music.

Nurturing Connection Through Community Activities

Winter is inherently a season of community, care, and connection. Consider fostering community through gatherings centered around shared meals or creative activities. Host a potluck, organise craft workshops, or create book clubs to enhance connections among friends and neighbours.

Engage in local initiatives, such as food drives or volunteer work at shelters- small acts of kindness can have a profound impact on those around you. Organising community dinners or support circles can foster unity and help neighbours rise through the colder months.

It is important to ensure in our communities that we know who needs help and support  during these solitary months.  So, reach out to friends, family, or neighbours for gatherings.

Embrace the Magic of Winter

As we embrace the final month of the winter season, it is important to recognise and honour the gentle wisdom of cyclical living. By nurturing ourselves, cultivating community, and celebrating the season's natural offerings, we can infuse our lives with warmth and magic during the final colder month.

Much love ✨
